The Highlanders Won The Grossmont South League Title In 2004

Grossmont South Individual Title

The Grossmont South League Individual Crown is a tough one to nail down. A lot of this race depends on one large factor, soccer. Last years meet had a little different look then some would think as a result of a soccer league finals conflict for two top runners from Granite Hills. Without a conflict this year it would appear that Ashli Sandoval is the one to be caught. Ashli started to show that she was the class of the field last year, with a few key graduations she appears to be the next to take the throne. However it is not final, she has competition from within her own team as Taryn Francil also appears to have the ability to make a run at the league title. A surprise is likely to develop as the league meets unfold this year. Steele Canyon Sophomore, Megan Meyer, came on strong in last years track season. She was a CIF finalist in the mile and set herself up to make an attempt to become the Grossmont South League Individual Champion. Ali Mendoza, alos from Steele Canyon has showed moments of  brilliance and has the ability to put toghether a season that could culminate with a run at the individual title. As is always true with the female runners a freshmen runner could  come in and change the entire landscape of the individual title. Even if a frosh phenom appears she is going to have a large challenge in order to over take all of these quality runners.

Grossmont North Individual Title

At first glance the Grossmont North League Individual Title appears to be a lock. Yet upon closer investigation one may see that there is more to it. The obvious favorite for this year is the defending champion, Kristen Peters. Peters, the Division II CIF runner-up last year, has her eyes set on the CIF Individual Title this year. Yet there is at least going to be some runners who will try to take the crown from Kristen. Johanna Fisherova, Wolf Pack teammate to Peters, was last years Grossmont North League runner-up and was 9th place at the CIF championships. Despite an injury in track that limited her trainning Fisherova will return strong for the 2005 cross country season and would love nothing more then to out pace her teammate. Yet the story in 2005 could become the youth movement. Early reports have Dede Spniler, an age-group All-American enrolled at El Cajon Valley. Dede has experience all the way to the national level, and has enjoyed success all along the way. With a slight injury last year she took the year off and rested before she would begin her prep career where she will attempt to duplicate the success she has enjoyed thus far. Also El Capitan duo of Sophomore Christy James, and Junior Stephanie Cook look to build on their success from last years cross country season as well as the track season. James was the best Freshmen in the conference last year and this year will be looking to make the job from quality Freshmen to League Title contender. Cook who was enjoying a great season last year prior to an injury looks to return to the form she enjoyed early last year.
